Energy efficiency – a housebuilder’s perspective

Edward Parker, Managing Director, Bennett Homes speaks to PHPD about energy efficiency and reveals the company’s ‘top tip’ for delivering energy efficiency in its new homes.

Q: How central to your business is the issue of energy efficiency?
It has become increasingly important over recent years to provide homes that are energy efficient. Buyers now recognise the benefits new build can deliver in terms of increased energy efficiency and its advantage over older housing stock.

Q: What techniques/solutions do you use on new homes to deliver thermal comfort and long-term low bills to customers? Why do you feel these are most appropriate?
We take a fabric first approach and now install Daikin air source heat pumps on many of our developments. Less commonly we add bolt –on technology such as photovoltaic and or solar panels.

Q: Do you aim to go beyond Building Regulations requirements for energy efficiency in a new home. If so, what solution(s) do you incorporate?
We consider each development individually and assess the likely target market before making a decision but more often than not we exceed Building Regulation requirements.

Q: What is your ‘top tip’ for delivering energy efficiency?
Definitely fabric first. However, homeowners are more likely to recognise the benefits of heat pumps, PV or solar panels.

Q: Do you feel regulations in this area need further reform?
Yes, the situation needs to be closely and regularly monitored to ensure we provide our customers with the most effective and efficient energy sources. Things have improved hugely in recent years and we must continue to enhance our offering.
