UK Construction Sector Report launched at Plantworx

The Construction Equipment Association launched its UK Construction Sector Report at the recent Plantworx event in Peterborough, where Mecalac scooped a top award.

The launch was attended by Government officials, including Louise Scott, a representative from the Automotive Unit at BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy), who also worked on the project, CECE (Committee for European Construction Equipment) delegates, including the Secretary General at CECE, Riccardo Viaggi, and other guests.

Hosted by CEA’s Chief Executive Rob Oliver – and introduced by the reports co-author KGP’s Alex Woodrow – the study revealed that that the UK Construction Sector ranked number one in Europe with a 24% market share.

It also underlined that the current Brexit debacle had not had a direct impact on sales of construction machinery in the UK and showed record revenue for the construction equipment industry in 2018, with sales of £13bn, up by 18% on the benchmark set for 2013. The UK was the largest producer of construction equipment in Europe in 2018, and the 5th largest in the world – producing in excess of 60,000 units – earning manufacturers around £13bn in revenue.

The CEA’s Rob Oliver said: “The Sector Report comes five years since the last one in 2014. At that time our industry and the world economy were still recovering from the financial crisis triggered in 2008. We can proudly report that the latest figures show record revenue for the sector and that the UK remains a good place to both manufacture and supply construction equipment.”

The Plantworx show, a live action construction event, which took place at the East of England Arena from June 11-13th, featured 446 exhibitors covering a massive 140,000sqm of space.

Amidst numerous product demonstrations, equipment manufacturer, Mecalac won ‘best live demonstration’ with the company’s 11MWR, 6MDX, TLB990 and 6MCR thoroughly impressing judges.

Allison Sedgwick, Operational Marketing Manager at Mecalac Construction Equipment UK, commented: “Taking home gold for ‘best live demonstration’ was testament to the team’s hard work and creativity in designing and planning the stand for this year’s Plantworx exhibition. The win was made all the more impressive by the other excellent displays we saw over the event’s three days.

“Despite the poor weather, there was a great turnout. We debuted a number of new models at the show and received a lot of positive feedback on the new designs and equipment technologies. It was a resounding success and we look forward to doing it all again in 2021.”

Mecalac presented a number of its latest models at the event, which included its 3MDX cabbed site dumper range and its MCR range. Updated for 2019, the latest MCR crawler-skid excavator from the company features a Stage V-compliant engine, new rejuvenated hood design and an optional excavator type boom on the smallest model.
