Peveril Homes inspires the next generation and teaches valuable lessons about safety in the workplace.
Getting youngsters excited about construction is no easy task, but Peveril Homes has recently been teaching school children from Waingroves Primary School about life in the industry as well as safety on the site at its Eden Development in Waingroves, Derbyshire.
Thirty Year 1 children from the local primary school made the short trip to the Eden site on Thursday 23 March for a guided tour of one of Peveril’s flagship developments to see what life is like on a construction site.
Complete with hard hats and high-visibility vests, they were led around the development by Peveril’s award-winning Senior Site Manager Adam Pinder, learning about what it takes to work in the industry for construction professionals.
Amy Reeves, Teacher at Waingroves Primary School, said, “The children are currently learning about ‘houses and materials’ in one of their topics – so the site tour forms part of their curriculum. Hopefully today will excite them when it comes to construction but also remind them not to treat building sites as a place for fun and games”.
As well as inspiring the construction industry leaders of the future, the aim of the day for the school and Peveril Homes was to educate the children that building sites are not playgrounds – with health and safety a core aspect of the day’s on-site lesson. Peveril Homes is ideally suited for this task, having won the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident’s (RoSPA) prestigious ‘President’s Award’ for an 11th consecutive year last year, for their ‘outstanding performance in health and safety at work.’
The class were able to walk around the site under supervision and see bricks being laid, concrete being mixed and witness the whole journey from choosing a site, to building a home. There was also the chance to look at a Peveril digger, visit the finished showhome, see the on-site marketing suite and learn more about how Peveril plan a development from start to finish. At the end of the day, the children were able to keep their Peveril high-visibility vests to take home with them as a reminder of the visit.
Senior Site Manager Adam Pinder, who was announced as winner of the LABC Warranty National Site Manager of the Year award in 2016, was impressed with the attitude of the class and stressed that building sites are definitely no place for children – “I think it is important, even at such a young age, that we educate kids about the dangers of building sites”.
He continued, “They have been really well behaved and I hope that the tour inspires a few of them to think about a career in construction when they are a bit older”.
