Next generation of site managers nurtured at Bellway developments in Hertfordshire

Housing developer Bellway is offering people a bright path within the housebuilding industry through its Apprenticeship Programme.

The theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, which started on Monday 6 February, was Skills for Life, highlighting how apprenticeships help individuals develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding, longstanding career.

Adam Simms and Georgio Sawaya have both benefitted from apprenticeships in site management with Bellway North London, based at developments in Hertfordshire.

Adam (above), 20, from Uxbridge, is in his final year of his apprenticeship, currently working as an Apprentice Trainee Assistant Site Manager based at Bellway at St James’ Park in Bishop’s Stortford. He joined Bellway after finishing his A-levels in 2020.

Adam, who was introduced to the construction industry after assisting his dad over lockdown with his loft extension, said: “When leaving school, I knew I didn’t want to go to university. At my interview with Bellway, they liked my attitude, and although I didn’t have much practical experience, they were willing to give me a chance.

“I enjoy the variety of the job, particularly working as part of a group where everyone works to each other’s strengths. It sounds clichéd but I look forward to coming onto site and solving problems and working out the root cause of issues.

“I’m thankful to my managers who gave me the confidence to succeed in the role and gave me the ability to prove myself.  My future goals are to start my NVQ level 6 and become fully qualified. I’d like to give back to Bellway, as a thank you to those who gave me an opportunity.”

Georgio (above), 21, from north-west London has completed his apprenticeship placement and is working as a Trainee Assistant Site Manager, currently based at Cedarbrook Rise in Goff’s Oak.

Georgio always knew he wanted to work in construction. He said: “The role and responsibility of a Trainee Assistant Site Manager is so varied, especially not being fixed to either the office or working on site every day – it’s a nice mix of both. It’s also been beneficial working as part of a team, as all the people I’ve worked with have been great.

“My future goals within Bellway are to become Assistant Site Manager and progress to Project Manager eventually. I definitely feel like Bellway has helped me grow professionally and look forward to the years ahead and my upcoming career.”

Bellway is a gold member of the 5% Club, meaning that more than five per cent of the workforce is in earn and learn schemes. The company currently has 225 apprentices and trainees.

Bellway offers a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities in a variety of different roles at different levels, including construction and trades, technical and commercial and business and finance.
