Alex Burgess, from IRSAP’s specification arm Clyde Radiators, discusses how designer radiators can be used to help deliver attractive and inspiring interiors in new homes.
People talk about using lighting and material textures, even smells, to induce the mix of positive emotions that lead to a house sale, but one obvious – yet often overlooked – way to contribute to an inviting and warm scheme, is to consider the choice of heat emitter. Whilst many still regard these only as a functional installation – to heat the room, perhaps this humble feature is now a more important consideration. Particularly now that many are spending more time at home, and so are looking for the comfort factor to facilitate this.
Replacing the flat, white panel box on the wall in each room with a designer option can also have a dramatic impact and effect on the overall aesthetic and appeal of the property, as well as serve its functional purpose. Today, there are models available that suit every style, whether contemporary or traditional that can enhance and elevate a development, regardless of the size and value of the scheme.
Colour options
For many new builds, a neutral palette may be preferable, so that prospective buyers can add their own personality and style to their new property. However, with colour playing a major role in human psychology, interior designers can use this to great effect in order to influence the mood and emotions of prospective buyers.
Leading radiator manufacturers are able to offer a wide range of colour options that suit any interior theme, whether it be neutral, bold, bright or dramatic, and some manufacturers are able to colour match radiators to RAL colours and even any paint colour.
One can of course opt for a classic and conventional white finish, or choose from lighter creams, beiges and greys to complement a neutral theme. Darker neutrals such as anthracite or black evoke a luxurious, timeless feel, and choosing a radiator in these hues can enhance a scheme looking to achieve this.
With colour blocking a current trend, developers may want to combine different colours in one area, particularly to highlight special features, or to enliven the room. This style can be used in many ways to create impact, whether it be using contrasting and bright colours to inject playfulness and joy to the scheme, or it can be applied with soft and soothing pastels, or a mix of tonal colours to create a calm ambiance. Whatever the palette, the radiator can be finished in a hue that works perfectly with the environment and set the desired tone.
Shape & form
Like colour, shape and form are a key design tactic to influence the atmosphere you’re trying to create for your buyers. Designer radiators can contribute to these objectives, with models available in many different shapes and styles. For example, arches and curves are now a regular feature to create feelings of a relaxation, comfort and a welcoming atmosphere, so radiators with these features are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms. Angular edges can suggest stability and confidence, which works well in home offices and kitchens.
A sense of scale
Another benefit of choosing designer radiators for a new development is the ability to ‘grow and shrink’ the model according to the space available. In fact, clever choice can maximise space otherwise not possible with a conventional heat emitter.
A vertical model is particularly effective in hallways and when finished in a colour that complements the scheme, it can create a wow factor and that all important positive first impression as the customer steps through the door.
Vertical lines lift the eye upward and can make entire interiors appear higher than they really are and, when applied in rooms with a double height ceiling, the vertical radiator design works effectively to create a sense of size and impact.
Conversely, small, or awkward shaped rooms also benefit from this radiator format, by maximising the use vertical wall space available. Furthermore, there are models available that offer an ultra slim profile without compromising on heat performance, so that the radiator does not necessitate a deep footprint where floor space is at a premium.
A bathroom sanctuary
The benefits outlined above also extend to heated towel rails in bathroom settings. A room that is high on the checklist of customer requirements, the bathroom for many, is considered a space for relaxation and even escapism.
All elements of a bathroom design can be coordinated to create a cohesive appeal and the heated towel rail can be used to great effect as part of this. Designer models enable developers to think beyond the standard white or chrome ladder rail to create modern spa-like sanctuaries or cosy and contemporary washrooms. For example, bathrooms with matt black fixtures and fittings, such a shower heads and taps, can be paired with a matt black radiator solution, to keep the luxe thread throughout.
Alternatively, towel rails with curved edges, or finished in a muted colour palette can be specified to create a sense of peace and subtle elegance.
Outdoor living
For outdoor buildings, radiator models that continue to inspire the viewer and elevate the space are also possible. Summer houses, gymnasiums, and garden office rooms can be furnished with designer electric models that offer the homeowner year-round comfort and use, while still achieving the design goals of the project.
