Taylor Wimpey demonstrated its support for the recent National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the life-changing opportunities apprenticeships offer young people.
National Apprenticeship Week (which ran from Monday 9th to Friday 13th March) highlighted apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and economy.
The developer currently has 188 trade and site management apprentices working throughout Britain. It recruited 70 trade apprentices in 2014, up 43% on the previous year and has a 96% retention rate for its apprentices.
Shannon Hartigan (pictured) is one of the company’s new recruits, working as an Apprentice Site Manager with Taylor Wimpey East London at its Reflections development in Romford. Previously a Corporal the Army Cadet Force, Shannon (19) started her new career in June 2014 and is gaining an in-depth knowledge of site management while achieving a relevant vocational qualification during the three-year scheme.
Shannon says: “I think what most appealed to me was that it wasn’t strictly just classroom or office work – the scheme really gets you involved in hands-on, practical work from the very beginning. I am really enjoying my apprenticeship – I feel like all the time I’m developing myself, as well as having a certain level of responsibility within my role.”
Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: “National Apprenticeship Week aims to increase the awareness and take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships. Apprenticeships are thriving in England, with significant Government investment making it the ideal time for people to become an apprentice or for businesses to hire one.
“Apprenticeships provide proven benefits to employers. They help businesses to improve productivity and competitiveness. Almost nine in ten employers who had hoped for benefits as a result of hiring an apprentice received them. Apprentice employers report benefits including improved skills levels, service, morale and productivity.”
