Family support charity Home-Start West Berkshire has celebrated the donation of £9,604 from corporate sponsor Helix Group, after the team at the Newbury construction company completed a sponsored trek across Pen y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales.
Setting out from their Liberty House headquarters on 10th September, and completing their hike near Brecon Beacons National Park, nine colleagues from the Berkshire-based builder had no idea they would more than triple their fundraising target of £2,500.
Helix Managing Director, Nic Davies, said: “We have been a corporate sponsor for Home-Start for three years now and, as Helix Group grows, it’s great to be able to bring more people into such a good cause. Our aim is not just to build homes, but to build up the communities in which we work.
“The trek was a great adventure for everyone who was able to come along and witness the beauty of Brecon Beacons Nations Park.”
The former West Berkshire Community Baby Bank was gifted to Home-Start West Berkshire by its founder Kayleigh Powell when she recently moved out of the local area. The Baby Bank, which Kayleigh set up from her own garage in November 2019, supports families with the essential items their children need during their early years. The service accepts good-quality second-hand clothes and equipment for babies and children up to age five and distributes them to families in extreme need.
A week before the trek Greenham Trust, a local financial support charity, accepted Home-Start West Berkshire’s application for match funding for the Baby Bank. For every pound supporters gave to members of the Helix team for completing the trek, the Trust will match with a further £1 donation.
Home-Start West Berkshire Director, Grace Green, said: “We can’t emphasise enough the difference that having this support from Helix means to Home-Start West Berkshire. It means we are able to offer more help to families when it is greatly needed, and enables us to work on projects that sustain our charities income.
