Newland Homes’ latest collection of zero carbon homes in Wiltshire has been praised by Melksham and Devizes MP, Brian Mathew, following a recent site visit.

Newland Homes has announced a substantial 49.21% reduction in operational carbon emissions over the course of a single year.

The company’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions decreased from 475.70 tonnes of CO₂ in 2022 to 241.59 tonnes in 2023, the equivalent of 1,801 one-way flights between London and Edinburgh.

The greatest savings have been achieved by switching all site machinery to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and phasing out the use of diesel.

Furthermore, Newland Homes is a certified Carbon Neutral business as recognised by Carbon Neutral Britain. The company’s carbon emissions have been retrospectively offset through Carbon Neutral Britain’s Woodland and Climate Funds. However, the company does not wish to rely on carbon offsetting and will endeavour to continue reducing its operational carbon emissions.

Tim continues: “We have addressed our main contributors to carbon emissions by switching to HVO and electric vehicles and will continue to seek new ways to reduce this further. We accept that it will be more challenging to sustain the rate of carbon reduction that we have achieved in 2023, but we will seek out new initiatives to keep up the momentum.”

The carbon footprint has been calculated using the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) framework, designed to increase awareness of energy costs within organisations, provide them with data to inform adoption of energy efficient measures, and to help them to reduce their impact on climate change. It is now a legal requirement for companies to report on emissions.

Gloucester-based Newland Homes has received unanimous approval from Tewkesbury Borough Council to build 145 zero carbon homes in Churchdown, not far from its Barnwood head office.

It offers a diverse range of housing, with 51 affordable homes and bungalows included in the plan. The development on Cheltenham Road East will feature homes entirely powered by renewable technologies, including air source heat pumps and solar panels.

The homes are designed to achieve an A rating in both energy efficiency and environmental impact, positioning them at the forefront of sustainable development and well above current UK building regulations.

Almost half of the development site is dedicated to public open space, which will include wildflower meadows, woodland areas, and play spaces. These landscape enhancements are designed to provide extensive ecological and wildlife benefits, with a projected 34% biodiversity net gain, significantly surpassing the expected planning standard of 10%.

Additional features of the project include allotments, spaces for self or custom build homes, and significant ecological initiatives. These initiatives encompass large public open spaces, hedgehog highways, and bird and bat boxes, catering to local wildlife.

Glos-based Newland Homes has won Best Sustainable Development in the recent WhatHouse? Awards.

The award was for St George’s Mead in Semington, Wiltshire, with the judges highlighting Newland’s ‘climate considerate’ methodology when delivering on its robust sustainability agenda, including zero carbon homes.

The 24 Semington homes were also praised for achieving the highest energy efficiency and environmental impact rating, which helps empower buyers to reduce their personal carbon footprint and play their own part in combating climate change.

Newland Homes has unveiled the first of 27 new homes in Cheltenham that are designed to have zero carbon emissions.

The homes, called ‘Pear Trees,’ are being built in response to the urgent need to address climate change.

Each of these five-bedroom detached homes features solar-powered air source heat pump. As a result, these homes are self-sufficient in terms of energy, producing as much energy as they require to function. This leads to lower energy costs for homeowners and reduces the environmental impact of everyday living.

These homes emit no net carbon emissions during their use, which is a significant improvement compared to the average UK home, which emits 3.6 tonnes of CO₂ per year (according to the HBF Watt a Save report in February 2023).

As part of the development, nine affordable zero carbon properties have been constructed in collaboration with Cheltenham Borough Homes.
