PHPD finds out how one civil engineering & groundworks company is benefitting from GPS controlled grading attachments on its latest Bobcat acquisitions.

Bedford-based ECL Civil Engineering has purchased two new Bobcat T86 compact track loaders with matching GPS controlled grading attachments from Versatile Equipment, the local Authorised Dealer for Bobcat throughout south east England. Over the last three decades, ECL has grown from being a groundworks services company to an ambitious and continually growing national civil engineering provider, with an annual turnover of more than £100 million.

Bobcat’s top-of-the-range T86 Compact Track Loader

Delivering a higher engine and hydraulic output, the Bobcat T86 is the most powerful compact track loader the company has ever built. The T86 uses a well-proven Stage V compliant 3.4 l Bobcat engine – producing 78 kW (105 HP) at 2600 RPM, providing more power than many other machines of its size. Just like all of Bobcat’s R-Series loaders, the engine is mounted in-line with direct drive, which improves the cooling capacity of the engine and hydraulic components.

Sean and Steve worked with Phil Stoneham, Area Sales Manager at Versatile Equipment on the purchase of the T86 compact track loaders. Phil added: “With the addition of the GPS Control Grading kit on the T86, we’re elevating grading performance by being able to achieve a remarkable precision of 3 mm or one-tenth of an inch. The Clear-View Cab on the T86 loaders maximises visibility, ensuring the best possible view of the tracks and the corners of the machines and a 360-degree safety camera system provides a full view of the surroundings.

Steve Wright added: “The Bobcat T86 is also one of only a few on the market to offer three different auxiliary hydraulic flow options, ensuring powerful hydraulic performance for a range of advanced attachments tailored to specific tasks.

“There is a standard flow configuration providing 87 l/min for applications such as load and carry, or where low hydraulic flow attachments are used. The T86 units also offer two additional hydraulic performance functions using the new Electronic Displacement Control (EDC) Pump on the T86: a High Flow function giving 138 l/min and a new industry unique Super Flow function taking auxiliary flow to 159 l/min.”

The Five Coupler Block (standard with the Super Flow function) provides a flexible approach to running different attachments. From one common source, the operator can attach both standard or high flow approved attachments to the smaller sized ó inch quick couplers. Then when using Super Flow, the use of the . inch couplers allows maximum performance and productivity from the approved advanced attachments.

Both High Flow and Super Flow options come integrated with Bobcat’s unique ‘Plug & Play’ attachment control device (ACD). The T86 machines also have Power Bob-Tach Attachment systems as standard. The Power Bob-Tach is an added comfort and productivity feature that allows some attachments to be connected and removed without the operator leaving the seat, just using the switches conveniently located in the cab – it is optional on Standard Flow machines.

Nuns using Bobcat L85 Compact Wheel Loader to help build convent

In Draste in the Czech Republic, the transformation of a former farm into a convent is becoming a dream come true – the nuns of the Barefoot Carmelite Sisters and many supporters have done a tremendous amount of work on the project. Construction machinery has also played a role in this. Out of necessity, the nuns at the convent began to operate machines such as a legendary Bobcat 773 skid-steer loader, which has now been joined by the new state-of-the-art Bobcat L85 compact wheel loader.

Bobcat has launched new Stage V versions of the company’s M-Series S630 and S650 Skid-Steer Loaders, designed for use in higher regulated markets in Europe. Customers now have a wider selection in this size of machine, with a choice between the new M-Series S630/S650 models and the more advanced R-Series S66/S76 machines. This will further strengthen Bobcat’s leadership position in this size category in the European market.

The new S630 radius lift path loader combines excellent manoeuvrability in tight areas with the reach and visibility needed for applications such as dumping materials over walls, backfilling or loading flatbed trucks. The S630 has a rated operating capacity of 1012 kg and a tipping load of 2023 kg. The S650 model features vertical lift path boom arms particularly suited to lift and carry as well as material-handling applications. The S650 has a rated operating capacity of 1227 kg and a tipping load of 2455 kg. Both models continue to offer excellent versatility through compatibility with a very wide range of Bobcat attachments.

Superior Performance
Delivering superior performance while adhering to strict Stage V emission regulations, both the S630 and S650 are powered by the well proven Bobcat D24 engine, featuring a Bosch Fuel Injection System. With the engine situated transversally in the S630/S650, these models have maintained their compact size, allowing the machines to operate and turn in the same small tight spaces.

New engine technology results in lower fuel consumption for the same type of work. The first engine oil service interval has also been extended to 500 hours and improved fuel filtration means less frequent filter replacements. The S630/S650 are also equipped with Versatile Duty Tyres as standard, that have a bi-directional design for most common mixed surfaces, which again reduces costs by improving tyre lifetime significantly.

Operator Comfort Features
Bobcat offers several popular comfort features for the S630/S650 including:

• Heat or Air Conditioning option (HVAC) – keeps operators more comfortable all through the year and in all locations.
• Cloth Suspension Seat – improves the operator’s comfort all year round.
• Auto Ride Control (option) – improves the operator’s comfort and machine stability.

The base S630/S650 models are equipped with a new Deluxe control panel offering a selection of most of the languages in Europe. Every machine is also equipped with Bobcat Telematics solutions.

The Deluxe panel reduces the risk of misuse, thanks to the keyless start function. Options such as High Flow or 2-Speed can also be locked, if necessary, and protected by passwords.

New after-treatment technology (DPF) works automatically without any interaction during normal operation. If necessary, this technology can be easily managed from the menu in the Deluxe panel, which enables the operator to monitor the machine and exhaust after-treatment. The new automatic multi-step engine low-idle sequence in cold conditions further improves engine performance.

On machines equipped with Selectable Joystick Controls (SJC), the auto-idle feature reduces the engine speed to low idle when the joysticks are in neutral position and have not been used for about five seconds. Auto-idle allows for quieter overall operation and reduced fuel consumption.

As well as the Deluxe Panel, Bobcat Telematics and Versatile Duty Tyres, the standard features on the S630/S650 include Hand and Foot Controls, a Deluxe Cab with Side Windows and a Suspension Seat. Options include a Cloth Suspension Seat; Selectable Joystick Controls; a Deluxe Cab with Heating or HVAC; Heavy Duty Offset and Severe Duty Tyres; High Flow with Attachment Control; 2-Speed and Power Bob-tach.

The Standard Warranty has been extended to two years (2000 hours) with Protection Plus providing up to five years of coverage.

More than 700 customers, dealers, suppliers and journalists from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) are heading to Doosan Bobcat EMEA’s campus in Dobříš, Czechia for Bobcat Demo Days 2024. From 21 May to 5 June, attendees will receive unprecedented access to the organisation’s comprehensive equipment lineup over a series of 10 intense full-day experiences.

Bobcat Demo Days 2024 offers participants an opportunity to get up close and personal with several of the manufacturer’s cutting-edge innovations, such as the TL25.60e electric telehandler concept, the RogueX2 concept loader, Operator Presence technology, the Pedestrian Detection Camera, and next-generation Digital Access software.

Launched in the EMEA region in 2011, Bobcat Demo Days allow invited guests to gain insights into the manufacturer’s latest advancements through hands-on time with machines and in-depth factory tours. A suite of industry-leading innovations
Bobcat Demo Days 2024 is showcasing a number of cutting-edge, industry-leading innovations, including the manufacturer’s TL25.60e electric telehandler concept. The model, which is still in development and not yet commercially available, has a rated capacity of 2.5 tonne and a lifting height of almost 6 m, matching the performance offered by its diesel-powered equivalent. With three separated electric motors designed to maximize efficiency, a hydrostatic transmission to boost performance, a maximum speed of 25 km/h and the same super-compact dimensions as the conventional Bobcat TL25.60, the cutting-edge electric concept delivers low noise levels, minimal operating costs and impressive versatility. This is the first time Bobcat has given customers and partners the opportunity to get hands-on time with its TL25.60e concept.

Attendees will have an opportunity to experience Bobcat’s transparent OLED (T-OLED) screen technology, which has been developed in collaboration with LG and BSI Research. T-OLED enables operators to access an array of functionality without taking their eyes off the worksite, offering unparalleled clarity, responsiveness and visibility. It also has the capacity to facilitate a range of more advanced applications, such as real-time virtual reality (VR) simulations for utility line mapping.

The RogueX2 concept skid-steer loader is another innovation on display at Bobcat Demo Days 2024, although attendees won’t be able to climb into the machine’s cab as it doesn’t have one. This autonomous, all-electric model has been built as a proving ground for technologies developed as part of Bobcat’s innovation roadmap, offering a glimpse of how future generations of loaders will facilitate an entirely new work experience for users.

Vijay Nerva, Innovation Lead, Bobcat EMEA, commented: “The RogueX2 produces zero emissions thanks to its lithium-ion battery, electric drive system and electric-actuated lift and tilt kinematics with no hydraulics. A follow-up to the RogueX, which we introduced at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023, the RogueX2 is a skid-steer version that features wheels instead of tracks to optimize its electric battery runtime, and its axial flux motors deliver incredible tractive effort.”

Bobcat will use this year’s event to showcase its Operator Presence technology, a concept that is currently being developed for excavator models. Operator Presence leverages a 3D time-of-flight (ToF) camera – advanced technology more commonly utilized in emerging sectors such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, gesture recognition and virtual reality (VR) – to enhance safety by monitoring users’ movements and the wider cabin environment. By actively tracking the operator’s presence and interactions within the cabin, the system can prevent unintended machine actions, ensuring a safer work environment – especially in close quarters. It can also detect multiple occupants, instantly disable workgroups to avoid accidents and recognize when a joystick is released, deactivating the associated workgroup while maintaining drive. These proactive safety measures are designed to minimize the risk of accidents, improve operator control and, ultimately, enhance overall worksite efficiency.

Guests at Bobcat Demo Days 2024 will get to witness Bobcat’s Pedestrian Detection Camera in action. The device’s software is able to differentiate between humans and their surroundings thanks to its AI-enabled processing capabilities, helping to eliminate unnecessary operator alerts. The innovation’s database is also able to identify humans in different postures and positions, including standing, kneeling, crouching, sitting, with their backs turned, and even when they are only partially visible.

Bobcat will also showcase its Digital Access software, an advanced system that allows operators to use smartphones as ‘keys’ to specific machines, providing an alternative to existing passcode entry functionality while ensuring units understand the preferences of their users before they begin work. In addition, this innovation enables fleet owners to lock out certain functionality or attachments in line with the respective skillsets of their employees.

These six innovations are the latest in a long line of advanced solutions that Bobcat has developed to enable its customers to accomplish more.

Hands-on time with Bobcat’s latest machines
Bobcat Demo Days 2024 will feature a selection of recently introduced machines, including the M-Series S630 and S650 Stage V skid-steer loaders, which have been developed for use in European markets. The models’ D24 engines, which feature Bosch fuel-injection systems, deliver superior performance while adhering to strict emission regulations, enabling attendees to see Bobcat’s long-standing commitment to sustainable operations in action.

This year’s event features the new lineup of Bobcat rotary telehandlers, which deliver unrivaled visibility thanks to the manufacturer’s patented panoramic cab. The latest range comprises nine Stage V models with lifting heights of between 18 and 39 m that have been designed for European markets, and four Stage IIIA machines with lifting heights of 18 to 26 m that have been developed for use in the Middle East and Africa.

Bobcat’s PG40 and PG50 generators will be on display in Dobříš this year. The units represent a leap forward in portable power solutions, offering a selection of advantages such as optional running gear for easy transportation and ‘Liquid Heat’, a low-load management system designed to reduce downtime and deliver peace of mind. Powered by Stage V HDI D24 engines, the eco-conscious models build on the success of their predecessors by delivering a combination of increased power and lower fuel consumption.

The PA12.7v compressor will also make an appearance at Bobcat Demo Days 2024. The portable variable pressure compressor utilizes a FlexAir system, which allows it to operate in the range of 5.5 to 12.1 bar, offering free air deliveries of 5.2 to 7 m³ per minute. As a result, the PA12.7v is suitable for a wide range of applications, making it one of the most versatile air compressors on the market.

In addition, Bobcat is demonstrating how its construction lineup is delivering even greater levels of sustainability to users. The manufacturer’s mini-excavators, skid-steer loaders, compact track loaders, compact wheel loaders, telehandlers, rotary telehandlers, mini track loaders and forklifts have been approved for use with HVO biofuel and other EN 15940 standard paraffinic fuels.

Volunteers from the Bobcat recently donated food and maintained the facilities and the gardens at the Ronald McDonald House Charity in Oxford, while in Northampton, staff planted trees and picked up in their local area.

Teams also litter picked around the perimeters at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Their efforts are part of the company’s global initiative to engage with the communities in which it works. More than 1000 employees in 12 countries participated in company-organized projects.
