The Pride in the Job 2024 Quality Award winners have been announced today by NHBC. The awards celebrate the best UK site managers and their dedication to raising standards in house building.

Now in its 44^th year and widely considered the ‘Oscars’ of the house-building industry, Pride in the Job has become the benchmark for exceptional site managers. Judging is rigorous, with assessment across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety. Thousands of inspections, with meticulous scoring and detailed verifications, have taken place to determine the 449 winners from a field of more than 8,000 sites, representing the top 5% of UK site managers.

Commenting on the awards, Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC said: “For more than four decades, Pride in the Job has underpinned NHBC’s purpose of raising standards in house building. The competition recognises the UK’s top site managers, showcasing best practice and rewarding excellence.

Pride in the Job has five categories: small, medium and large builders, plus multi-storey for projects up to seven storeys and high-rise for projects more than seven storeys.

The Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards in the autumn, with the national Supreme Award winners unveiled in January 2025.

Glos-based Newland Homes has won Best Sustainable Development in the recent WhatHouse? Awards.

The award was for St George’s Mead in Semington, Wiltshire, with the judges highlighting Newland’s ‘climate considerate’ methodology when delivering on its robust sustainability agenda, including zero carbon homes.

The 24 Semington homes were also praised for achieving the highest energy efficiency and environmental impact rating, which helps empower buyers to reduce their personal carbon footprint and play their own part in combating climate change.

Against a weakening picture of construction activity – down by a third against the same period in 2022 – private housing is the UK’s stand-out performer, soaring 19% during the fourth quarter of 2023 according to Glenigan’s January 2024 Construction Review.

Glenigan says the softening in both main contract awards and planning approvals aligns with the general pattern of UK economic activity and a febrile political environment, less than a year – or even five months – away from a General Election. However, it’s not all doom and gloom as the rise in private housing projects suggests expectations for the housing market are on the up; not least thanks to predictions of at least two and perhaps five interest rate cuts of 0.25% in 2024.

The January edition of the review which focuses on the three months to the end of December 2023, covering all major (>£100m) and underlying (<£100m) projects, with all underlying figures seasonally adjusted. The fall in construction activity was largely driven by a significant drop in major project performance, down 17% against the preceding three-month period, with starts being cut almost in half (-44%) compared with last year.

The sector-specific and regional index, which measures underlying project performance, saw starts softening across the board. However, the residential vertical picked up significantly, complemented by some encouraging upticks in a handful of UK regions.

The Red House, Twyford, Dorset and Becontree Estate, Dagenham, Essex have triumphed in the 2023 Brick Development Association Brick Awards in the Individual Housing Development and Small Housing Development categories respectively.

The Red House, a contemporary new home in rural Dorset, designed by David Kohn Architects, was named RIBA House of the Year in 2022. At Becontree, the design is the product of deep research into the characteristics of the wider estate, delivering a ‘gentle density’ of 19 residences, and a community space, across two buildings.
