Housebuilding slows in last three months of 2018

The latest official statistics from Government shows that new dwelling starts in the UK dipped in the last three months of 2018, when compared to the previous three months and the previous year.

For the quarter to December 2018, new build dwelling starts in England were estimated at 40,580, an 8% decrease compared to the previous three months and a 2% reduction on a year earlier.

Completions, however, rose slightly. For the December quarter they were estimated at 42,970, a 2% increase from the previous quarter and 1% higher than a year ago.

Looking across the whole year (2018) the statistics from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) indicate that new build dwelling starts in 2018 (165,160) were in line with those for 2017. During the same period, completions totalled 165,090 an increase of 1% compared with 2017.
