Demand grows for multi-generational homes

Demand for new homes that provide enough space for multiple generations has risen during lockdown, according to Bovis Homes.

The housebuilder, part of Vistry Group, has reported a growing number of enquiries from buyers across Cambridgeshire and beyond interested in larger homes to accommodate all the family.

It comes as research suggests that lockdown has accelerated the shift towards multi-generational living, with a survey by finder.com revealing that 12 per cent of adults in the UK have moved back in with their parents, and two-thirds have no move-out date in sight.

The trend has sparked greater interest in properties designed to accommodate several generations under one roof, such as the three-storey Mulberry house type which is available in the current phase of the Bovis Homes at Northstowe development.

Charlotte Barber, sales manager for Bovis Homes, said: “With multi-generational living continuing to rise, there is a growing need for more properties on the market which diverge from the traditional home layout.

“The so-called ‘granny annexe’ has become a feature of many homes over the years, with owners keen to upgrade their properties to house their extended family. However, many new-build homes offer the space and layouts to accommodate multi-generational living without the need for such extensive renovations.

“The Mulberry is ideally suited to such families. With two dormer bedrooms in the roof space and three generously sized bedrooms on the second floor, it caters perfectly for multi-generational families seeking their own space and privacy within one household.

“At Northstowe, buyers will also find a brand-new neighbourhood which caters for people of all ages. The new town will eventually comprise a range of facilities, including schools, convenience stores and a community centre. It is also well-connected, situated just eight miles north of Cambridge.”

There are just four new homes still available to buy in the current phase at Bovis at Northstowe, with the next phase set to launch soon. Three of the remaining properties are the Mulberry house type, with prices starting from £499,995.
