Development on former Royal Mail site in Chelmsford nears completion

Bellway is adding the finishing touches to its Novello development in Chelmsford as construction work at the site nears completion.

The homebuilder has delivered 203 apartments on the site of the former Royal Mail sorting office off Victoria Road, where there is just three new homes still available to buy.

The completion of the development, a collection of one and two-bedroom apartments split across four residential buildings, marks the end of eight years of regeneration work by Bellway in Chelmsford city centre.

Novello follows the completion of Marconi Evolution, a scheme of almost 500 new homes built on the former Marconi factory site off New Street, and the opening of Bellway Essex’s new divisional office in nearby Cunard Square, off Townfield Street.

Between them, the two residential developments have delivered an investment of more than £6 million in local services and infrastructure through the planning agreements with Chelmsford City Council.

Jenny Walker, Sales Director at Bellway Essex, said: “The new homes at Novello are a continuation of the work we have done in revitalising disused brownfield sites and turning them into vibrant new residential communities right in the heart of Chelmsford. In the past eight years we have delivered a total of 677 new homes across these two developments in the city.

“This particular piece of land had been derelict since the sorting office closed in 2014. Following the demolition of the building a year later we got to work on construction a range of high-quality new apartments for the first-time buyer and commuter market.

“The attainable prices of the one and two-bedroom apartments and Novello’s city centre location have made the development extremely popular with younger buyers looking to get onto the property ladder. The close proximity of Chelmsford railway station has also proved a big draw for people who commute to work in the capital.

“As well as 203 new homes, Novello also features a pocket park and landscaped urban piazza, complementing the wider improvements to the public realm that have taken place in this prime city centre location.”

The final homes for sale at Novello start at £263,995 and are ready to move into straight away.
