Burton development proving popular with first-time buyers as construction reaches halfway stage

Construction work has passed the halfway stage at a new housing development taking shape at the southern edge of Burton-upon-Trent.

Bellway is building 113 homes at Evelyn Gardens, off Main Street in the village of Branston, around three miles south of the town centre.

A total of 65 properties have now been built at the site, with a further nine due to be finished in the coming weeks. The homes are being built by Bellway West Midlands’ award-winning site manager, Leigh Larkins, who recently received the NHBC Seal of Excellence.

Construction work is on track to be completed by April 2022.

Since the launch of the development in March 2019, Bellway has sold 47 of the homes at the development, predominantly to first time buyers. Almost half of these utilised the Help to Buy scheme.

Located next to Branston Leas Nature Reserve, Evelyn Gardens features a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes alongside areas of public open space, including ponds at each side of the development.

Marie Richards, Sales Director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “The development’s location just off the A38 has made it a popular choice for people who commute to Birmingham and Derby. Evelyn Gardens offers a peaceful and attractive countryside setting, all within a short drive from the centre of Burton-upon-Trent.

“The mix of houses and apartments cater for people at various stages of the property ladder, but especially first-time buyers who account for a large portion of the purchasers at the development so far. Evelyn Gardens is attracting buyers not only from Burton but from across the surrounding areas, including people from Lichfield looking to get more for their money.

“As well as offering a convenient location and excellent transport links for commuters, the properties at Evelyn Gardens boast flexible living spaces which are ideal for homeworking, a trend which has been very much on the increase over the past year.”

The new version of Help to Buy enables buyers to purchase a new-build home with a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage, with the remaining 20 per cent being provided in the form of an equity loan which is interest free for the first five years of homeownership.

However, unlike its predecessor, the updated scheme is only available to first-time buyers and is restricted to homes which fall within a regional price cap – £255,600 in the West Midlands, where Evelyn Gardens is located.

A range of two, three and four-bedroom houses are currently available, with prices starting from £194,995. A selection of one-bedroom apartments are due to be released for sale soon.
